Example: Prepare Esri basemaps for use in offline workflows

ArcGIS Enterprise comes preconfigured with a collection of basemaps from ArcGIS Online. These basemaps are not supported for use in offline workflows. For example, you cannot take these preconfigured basemaps offline in Collector for ArcGIS.

The following python script takes the default ArcGIS Online basemaps and adds them as map items in your portal. The basemap map items can be taken offline and used in offline workflows. To run the script, you'll need to provide your ArcGIS Online account credentials.

You're required to specify the following information when running the script:

  • URL used to access Portal for ArcGIS. This can be ArcGIS Web Adaptor URL, for example, https://webadaptorhost.domain.com/webadaptorname or the URL of the machine hosting the portal, for example, https://portal.domain.com:7443/arcgis. You must include the fully-qualified domain name of the machine when specifying the URL.
  • User name and password of an account in your portal.
  • The name of a folder where the new map items will be created. If not provided, the map items are created in your root folder.
  • User name and password of an ArcGIS Online account. This script will embed your ArcGIS Online credentials into the new map items, which enables the offline capabilities of the basemaps.

The following example creates a collection of basemaps in your root folder. The basemaps include your ArcGIS Online credentials so applications like Collector for ArcGIS can use them in offline workflows.

python prepareEsriBasemapsForOfflineUse.py https://webadaptorhost.domain.com/webadaptorname portalUser portalPassword arcGISOnlineUser arcGISOnlinePassword
#!/usr/bin/env python
# Requires Python 2.7+

# Sample Usage:
# python addOfflineBasemaps.py -u <destinationPortal> -o <portalAdmin>
#                              -s <portalPassword> -f <destFolder>
#                              -a <agoUsername> -p <agoPassword>
